We recommend that your child visit our pediatric dentist when the first tooth appears, but no later than his or her first birthday. Since this visit to the dentist is usually short and involves very little treatment, your child has the opportunity to meet our dentist in a non-threatening way during their first dental visit. Since our dentists are experienced with even the youngest of patients, most children smile and even laugh during their first dental appointment at our office!
Before your first dental visit, we suggest talking to your child about what to expect. Take time to play "dentist" with your child at home to familiarize them with the process. Read your child a story about heading to the dentist. If you are the parent of a toddler, pretend that you're counting their teeth and let them do the same to you.
If your child takes naps, make sure that you schedule their first dental appointment for a time where they will be well-rested. Don't use negative words like pain, shot, or needle around your child. Last but not least, don't be worried if your child cries during their first dental visit. A young child may react that way to an unfamiliar environment, but will quickly be put at ease by our experienced and compassionate pediatric dentists.
During your first dentist visit we will show you how to properly clean your child's teeth and recommend oral care products to keep their developing gums and teeth healthy. Our dentists will gently examine their teeth and gums, checking for early signs of decay and other dental problems. During your first dental visit, we will also look at your child's face and jaws for signs of misaligned teeth.
Parents play an important role in maintaining their child's good oral health, and are encouraged to participate in their child's dental visits with our staff. Regular exams, a balanced diet, and proper oral hygiene at home will help your child enjoy a lifetime of healthy smiles they'll love to show off!
